College Drive Committee

College Drive

Today, Alderman Bob Olson, Chairmain of the Safety and Public Works Committee, Alderwoman Mary Koep, Chairman of the Personnel and Finance Committee, and myself, President of the Brainerd City Council met for our College Drive Committee. At our previous meeting, we asked the engineering department to look at costs and options for a much scaled down project than what had been proposed in a recent petition by the College. This was a very encouraging meeting.

The basic concept was laid out as follows; City staff to design as much as possible, 4 way stop at intersection of 5th and Quince, resurface College Drive from East River Road to 5th and Quince, signal light at the intersection of SW 4th with turn lanes, sidewalk on south side of road from CSAH 48 to SW 4th, pedestrian crosswalks with flashers at SW 8th, SW 6th and one additional, and additional signage. Basically, addressing the safety concerns, private property rights and trimming the costs to be more feasable.

This proposal would reduce the costs from over $6 Million to about $920,000, while addressing the concerns of most citizens. No roundabouts, no freeway, protect private property, etc. An option for a trail could be considered for an additional approximate $700,000 amount.

There are still some details to work out, however, this is a much more reasonable solution to College Drive. Originally, there was going to be another public hearing tonight, November 22, 2010, however, due to road conditions it has been rescheduled to 5pm on December 6, 2010. At that time, the committee will present the scenerio to the public, as well as the rest of the Council.
